"I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you." Jeremiah 31:3

Many people believe that God loves the world. The doubt shows up when the question gets personal: why would God love me, of all people? I know my mistakes, my relapses and the thoughts no one else sees. Sometimes it feels easier to believe that God puts up with you than to believe that He truly loves you.

The Bible answers that question in a surprising way. It does not say that God loves you because, deep down, you are a good person. It says the reason for His love is found in God, not in you. That may sound like a small detail, but it changes everything: a love that did not begin with your merit will not end with your failure. If you first want to understand what this love is, the article on what the love of God is explains the meaning of agape.

This guide deals with the "why" question. You will see the Bible's short answer, the passage that explains the reason for God's love, seven reasons with verses, how God loves someone who still sins, what to do with His love when life hurts, why it is so hard to believe and a step-by-step guide to receiving that love every day.

Why Does God Love Me? The Bible's Short Answer

According to the Bible, God loves you because He is love and He chose to love, not because you did something to deserve it. The reason lies in God's character: "God is love" (1 John 4:16). You are not the cause of this love. You are its object.

This answer lifts a huge weight off your shoulders. If God loved you because of your performance, you would have to keep performing to stay loved. Since the reason is in God, who does not change, His love does not rise and fall with your day. John puts it this way: "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son" (1 John 4:10).

The Reason Is Not in You: What Deuteronomy 7 Reveals

The most direct biblical text on the "why" of God's love is in Deuteronomy. Moses explains to Israel why God chose a small, enslaved people. The answer is almost circular, and that is on purpose:

"It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you" (Deuteronomy 7:7-8).

Notice it: God loved because He loved. There was nothing in Israel that explained the choice. Not size, not strength, not goodness. The New Testament repeats the same logic when it talks about salvation: "he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy" (Titus 3:5). And Paul says God acted "because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses" (Ephesians 2:4-5).

An honest note: this does not mean you have no worth. It means your worth comes from God's love, not the other way around. A person is not loved by God because they are precious. They become precious because God loves them.

7 Biblical Reasons Why God Loves You

"Reasons" here are not your merits. They are truths the Bible reveals about who God is and what He has already done for you. Each one comes with a verse and a way to apply it.

1

1 John 4:19 — He loved first

"We love because he first loved us."

How to apply itGod's love is not a response to your love for Him. It came first. You do not have to start anything to be loved. When your faith feels weak, remember that the relationship does not depend on you having started well.
2

Ephesians 1:4-5 — He chose you before anything else

"Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will."

How to apply itBefore you were born, failed or succeeded at anything, God already had a purpose of love. The text says this was "according to the purpose of his will": God wanted it. When you feel like an accident or a burden, come back to this sentence.
3

Psalm 139:13-14 — He formed you

"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."

How to apply itYou are not mass-produced. God "knitted" you together, like someone doing careful handwork. We were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Treat your life, and the lives of others, as the work of someone who loves what He makes.
4

Isaiah 43:4 — you are precious in His eyes

"Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life."

How to apply itA few verses earlier, God says: "I have called you by name, you are mine" (Isaiah 43:1). God's love has a name and an address. When other people's opinions weigh too much, remember who has already said what you are worth.
5

Isaiah 49:15-16 — He does not forget you

"Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands."

How to apply itGod compares His love to a mother's and says His is even steadier. If you have been forgotten, abandoned or rejected by someone close to you, this text speaks directly to you: your name is engraved on God's hands.
6

1 John 3:1 — He calls you His child

"See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are."

How to apply itGod does not love you the way a boss values a good employee. He loves you the way a father loves a child. "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him" (Psalm 103:13). Talk to Him as a child, not as an employee afraid of being fired.
7

Romans 8:38-39 — nothing separates you from this love

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

How to apply itPaul made a list of everything that might threaten God's love and crossed out every item. If not even death can separate you, a bad day cannot either. Read this list out loud when you feel you have lost God's love.

Read together, the seven reasons point to the same place: God loves you because of who He is and what He decided to do. None of them depends on you being in a good spiritual season.

But that is exactly where the most common objection comes up. If I keep failing, how can God keep loving me? The Bible does not run from that question.

How Can God Love Me When I Am a Sinner?

The short answer is that God never loved you for being sinless. "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). The cross did not happen after humanity improved. It happened for people who were still in the wrong.

Jesus told the story of a son who took his inheritance, wasted it and came home with nothing. The father did not wait for a well-rehearsed apology: "while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him" (Luke 15:20). The son came back in shame. The father ran.

That does not mean sin does not matter. Love is not approval of everything. The Bible says that "the Lord disciplines the one he loves" (Hebrews 12:6). God loves you too much to leave you as you are. Discipline is proof that you are His child, not proof that you lost His love. If guilt is heavy right now, also read what to do when you feel you don't deserve God's forgiveness.

If God Loves Me, Why Do I Suffer?

This may be the most painful question of all. God's love is not a guarantee of a life without loss. Paul, who wrote the strongest words about this love, also listed what Christians were going through: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?" (Romans 8:35).

Notice that he does not say these things never happen. He says they do not separate. And he adds: "in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). Suffering is real, but it is not proof that God stopped loving you. The Bible does not give a simple answer for every pain, and it would be dishonest to pretend it does. To go deeper, see why God allows suffering.

Why Is It So Hard to Believe God Loves Me?

Many people can answer the question in theory and still cannot believe it in practice. A few barriers come up again and again:

  • The picture of an earthly father: people who had an absent, harsh or violent father tend to project that onto God. The psalmist knew that pain: "my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in" (Psalm 27:10).
  • Guilt that will not go away: the heart keeps accusing even after forgiveness. John answers: "whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything" (1 John 3:20). The article on how to deal with guilt walks through this calmly.
  • A performance culture: we spend our lives being graded by scores, targets and likes. A love you cannot earn seems suspicious. But "by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8).
  • Confusing feelings with truth: some days you feel nothing at all. God's love does not depend on how you feel about it. Paul prays that believers would know "the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge" (Ephesians 3:19). It is bigger than your perception of it.
  • The fear of rejection: many fears are rooted in the fear of not being accepted. The article on how to overcome fear with the Bible shows how God's love "casts out fear".

Does God Love Everyone, or Does He Love Me Personally?

Both. The Bible says that "God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son" (John 3:16) and that "he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good" (Matthew 5:45). God's love reaches every person.

But this universal love is never generic. Paul writes in the singular: "the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). Jesus said that sparrows do not fall without the Father knowing and that "even the hairs of your head are all numbered" (Matthew 10:30). And Zephaniah describes a God who "will rejoice over you with gladness" (Zephaniah 3:17). God does not love you somewhere in the crowd. He loves you by name.

There is an even stronger detail. In His prayer before the cross, Jesus prayed that the world would know that the Father "loved them even as you loved me" (John 17:23). At Jesus' baptism, the Father said: "This is my beloved Son" (Matthew 3:17). Whoever is in Christ is received with that same love. This personal love is the beginning of a relationship, and the article is it possible to know God personally? shows how it grows deeper.

Step by Step: How to Receive God's Love Every Day

  • Stop trying to earn it

The first step is letting go of the idea that you have to prove something. God's love "is not your own doing; it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8). You do not pay for a gift. You receive it with open hands.

  • Start the day with a truth, not a demand

"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22-23). Yesterday did not use up God's love. Today it is new.

  • Answer the accusing voice

When the thought "God cannot love me after this" comes, answer with Scripture: "God is greater than our heart" (1 John 3:20). Confess what needs confessing, and then stop carrying what has already been forgiven.

  • Ask to understand this love

Understanding God's love is not only mental effort. Paul prayed for it: that believers, "rooted and grounded in love," would comprehend its breadth, length, height and depth (Ephesians 3:17-18). Pray the same prayer for yourself.

  • Stay close to the source

Jesus said: "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love" (John 15:9). Prayer, reading the Bible and fellowship with other Christians do not buy God's love. They keep you close to where it flows.

  • Let the love overflow

People who know they are loved can love without so much fear of losing. "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). To see how this becomes practical with the people around you, see these Bible verses about love.

A Prayer for Anyone Who Struggles to Believe God Loves Them

If this truth still feels far away, you can start with this prayer. Swap the words for your own.

Father, I know You love the world, but sometimes I cannot believe that You love me. I know my mistakes, and I am ashamed of many of them. Thank You that Your love did not begin with me and does not depend on me. You loved me first. When my heart condemns me, remind me that You are greater than my heart. Help me stop trying to earn Your love and simply receive it. Help me grasp the breadth, length, height and depth of Your love, and let that love overflow to the people around me. In Jesus' name, amen.
